First Day of School!!!

| September 9, 2012

I'm guessing my family isn't the only one that had the tradition of taking a "first day of school" picture each year... Continuing the tradition!

NYC public schools started on Thursday. I had a great day meeting the students and kicking off the school year! Here is the first grade classroom in which I’m student teaching:

We have one of the larger classrooms in the building.

Here are some highlights from the day:

  • First graders and their parent(s)/guardian(s) arrived at the classroom beginning around 8:30
  • We placed books on each of the tables so the kids would have something to do until the day officially started. I sat down and read a book about bears with one student
  • The day officially began! The kids moved to the big carpet, where we read a book about first grade and went around sharing our names with the class.
  • While the books was being read, the kids spotted a tiny bug, and there were a few moments of chaos before it disappeared— gave me a good laugh.
  • The students each have a “book baggie” with 7 books from their reading level. The students grabbed their baggies and did some silent reading. I noticed one student ‘staring into space’ and sat with him to read a couple books.
  • The kids went to their performing arts/dance class then to lunch and recess
  • We picked the kids up at lunch. I heard a lot of, “Are we going home now??” from the kids. We headed back to the classroom for an art project. The kids created self-portraits and wrote a few sentences about themselves.
  • Then the kids got ready for the end of the day, which took a long time– it’s quite a process to get 5 and 6-year-olds organized and packed up.
  • We walked them out to the school yard where their parents/guardians picked them up!
